SU Panel Discussion Explores Flint Water Crisis April 28

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University hosts the panel discussion “The Flint, MI, Water Crisis: Could It Happen Here?” 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in Teacher Education and Technology Center Room 153.

The program provides the opportunity for national experts and local authorities to share insights into issues regarding environmental racism and water as a basic human right, asking whether something like what happened in Flint could happen in the Salisbury area. A question-and-answer session follows the discussion.

Panelists include 50K Souls Outreach members Jermichael Mitchell and Rufus Ryder, Salisbury Mayor Jake Day, Daily Times reporter Debbie Gates, Dr. Sarah Surak of SU’s Political Science and Environmental Studies departments, SU Director of Campus Sustainability and Environmental Safety Wayne Shelton, and Julia Howell, Student Government Association vice president of sustainability and president-elect.

In addition, two experts will “Google Hangout” with the panel. They include Jacqui Patterson, national director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program, and Nayyirah Shariff, a Flint resident and Black Lives Matter representative.

Sponsored by the Student Affairs and Multicultural Student Services offices, PACE, the Social Work and Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution departments, and the Student Government Association, admission is free and the public is invited.
