SU Philosophy Symposium Explores 'Culture, Community and Migration' Apr. 14

SALISBURY, MD---Immigration has been a hot topic in recent years in the U.S. and beyond. But when the issue is pared down, what does it really mean to be citizens of a multicultural society?

Salisbury University attempts to answer that question and more during its 38th annual Philosophy Symposium, “Culture, Community and Migration: Who Are We?” 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in Conway Hall Room 153.

Guest speakers include Drs. Jason Hill, professor of philosophy and distinguished honors faculty at DePaul University, and Serena Parekh, associate professor of philosophy at Northeastern University.

Drawing from recent national and international events, they discuss topics including: What allows humans to identify as part of a community? Is it a shared culture or a sense of common humanity? What do (and should) citizens of a multicultural society share with each other? What are U.S. citizens’ obligations to fellow citizens and to non-citizens such as refugees?

The morning session features speaker presentations. The afternoon includes a panel and open discussion.
