SU Relay For Life Preparations in Final Stretch

SALISBURY, MD---Combining entertainment, food, fun and community with a sense of hope and optimism for the future in the battle against cancer, Salisbury University’s 2004 Relay For Life brings together hundreds SU representatives and local participants from 6p.m.-6a.m. Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25 on the intramural fields at Wayne Street. To date, 25 teams have signed up with a variety of themes and dedicated walks.  They include SGA, American Marketing Association, the Education Club, social sorority Zeta Tau Alpha, accounting honor society Beta Alpha Psi, the Fishing Club, and the Student Organization for Activities Planning (SOAP). In addition to individual teams of SU students, faculty and staff have committed as well. Some of the themes and dedicated walks include SOAP’s jungle theme, the Education Club’s “An apple a day keeps cancer away” and the SU Advancement Division’s memorial walk for former colleague Sue Brittingham. To raise money, teams do individual fundraisers before and during the Relay. These include selling raffle tickets and Relay Stars, which feature the person’s name and are posted on campus. A lighting ceremony will be held at dusk as part of the survivor celebration. The ceremony includes luminaria and tiki lights that will be placed around the track in honor or memory of a cancer patient. The luminaria are sold one for $10 and three for $15 and tiki lights are $25. To place orders, please contact Jim Dragos at jimdragos@hotmail.com. SU faculty, alumni and student cancer survivors are urged to participate in the survivors’ ceremony that begins at 5 p.m. followed by the lighting ceremony that begins at dusk. Entertainment continues throughout the 12 hours. It includes themed laps, relay races, karaoke and live bands. This is SU’s third year in the national program and teams hope to raise enough money to top last year’s $35,000. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and teams may sign up until the night of Relay.
