SU Students Showcase Community-Based Wellness Research and Activities During Penguin Run May 2

Penguin RunSALISBURY, MD---Students in Dr. Chrys Egan’s Communication Research class at Salisbury University showcase community-based wellness research and activities during the post-race party for St. Francis de Sales Catholic School’s second annual Penguin Run Kids Dash and 5K run/walk.
   
The run is scheduled 8-11 a.m. Saturday, May 2. The event promotes family fitness, community health and the St. Francis de Sales Penguins.

Pre-race events begin at 8:15 a.m. with the “Blessing of the Runners” and the St. Francis school choir singing the National Anthem. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Kids Dash, a 50- to 100-yard sprint across the St. Francis campus. Children race in heats based on age. Registration is $5 in advance, $10 that day. Finisher’s medals awarded to all children who participate.

At 9 a.m., 5K run/walk participants start at the St. Francis campus, then travel to SU and back in a 3.1-mile loop. The race is open to all fitness levels including elite athletes, joggers, walkers, children, older adults, and “Athletes Serving Athletes” with disabilities. Medals awarded to the top three male and top three female runners in each 10-year age bracket. Registration is $25 in advance, $30 that day. The first 100 registrants receive Penguin Run T-shirts. 

Runners may register in advance at www.stfrancisdesales.net or by searching “Penguin Run” at www.active.com. Participants may register individually or as part of a team.

Prizes are awarded for biggest team and best team theme. The family-friendly post-race party from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. includes food, drinks, live band, magician, games, crafts, face painting and local health agency activities. Raffle prizes from sponsors will be given away by randomly drawing race bib numbers.  

Race packet pick-up is 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 1, during Pizza Night at the St. Francis de Sales Parish Center on Riverside Drive. Race day pick-up and registration is 7:30-8:25 a.m. Saturday, May 2.
