Salisbury Youth Orchestra Seeks New Members for Spring 2008

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury Youth Orchestra is seeking new members for its spring 2008 season.  All young musicians from the Eastern Shore region are invited to participate.

The first rehearsal is 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Salisbury University.  Held in Fulton Hall, Room 112, new members, as well as returning performers, may attend.

“The youth symphony provides students a unique experience with orchestral music,” said Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, conductor and assistant professor of music at SU.  “It’s a totally different repertoire and I try to expose them to some of the great composers.”

Established in 1989, the Salisbury Youth Orchestra is a full orchestra with strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.  With some 40-50 members, it provides performance opportunities for students who can read music, typically ranging in age from fourth grade to high school seniors.

The Salisbury Youth Orchestra is supported by its Parent’s Association, as well as SU, the SU Foundation and the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council.  Its spring season culminates with a concert on May 15.

In addition to the youth orchestra, Schoyen conducts the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and teaches cello and bass at SU.  With extensive orchestral experience, he has performed concerts throughout the United States, Germany, Mexico and Spain.  He honed his cello skills at the New England Conservatory of Music and Carnegie Mellon University, before earning his D.M.A. at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
