Scott Earns GIS Professional Certification

SALISBURY, MD---When it comes to the field of geographic information systems (GIS), Salisbury University’s Dr. Michael Scott has put himself on the map.

Scott, a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Geosciences, recently became the first certified GIS Professional on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  He’s also among only a handful of GIS Professionals who are also university faculty.

Offered by the GIS Certification Institute, the distinction is primarily based on education, experience applying GIS skills to real world problems, and contributions to the advancement of GIS technology.

In addition to teaching several undergraduate courses, Scott is program director for SU’s Master of Science in GIS and Public Administration.  He is also director of the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative at SU.

“Dr. Scott’s contributions to the field of GIS are extremely impressive and have greatly benefited our department and the University, as well as the local community and Mid-Atlantic region,” said Dr. Brent Skeeter, department chair.

Scott earned his Ph.D. in Geography from University of South Carolina in 1998.  Since arriving at SU, he has initiated and/or participated in some 75 funded GIS projects totaling more than $1.5 million.
