Tickets on Sale for 'Victorian Springtime' Nabb Research Center Fundraiser Apr. 30

SALISBURY, MD---The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture hosts its annual fundraising event, “Victorian Springtime in Snow Hill,” from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Governor John Walter Smith House in Snow Hill, MD.

The event includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar including Thornton’s mint juleps, period music and a silent auction.

The Governor John Walter Smith House is located on a one-and-a-half-acre lot in residential Snow Hill. The home was designed by architect Jackson C. Gott of Baltimore and built in 1889-90 for the governor with entertaining in mind. The home features over 20 rooms, including a large dining room with original furniture, grain-painted pocket doors, stick-and-ball fretwork, 8-foot-tall first-floor windows, 11 fireplaces and a wrap-around porch. The most unique features in the home are the original stained glass windows.

Smith served Maryland as governor for four years, as a U.S. Senator for 13 years and as a leader of the Democratic Party for more than 30 years. He was born in Snow Hill on February 5, 1845, and had deep family roots in Worcester County.

After his death in 1925, Smith passed the property to his daughter, Georgia Smith Foster. The current owners, William Hatala and Kemp Wills, are continuing to restore the house.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $75 per person. To purchase tickets call 410-543-6312. For more information visit the Nabb Research Center Web site at http://nabbhistory.salisbury.edu.
