'U.S. News & World Report' Names SU Among Best Colleges for Veterans

U.S. News & World ReportSALISBURY, MD---U.S. News & World Report has named Salisbury University one of the nation’s Best Colleges for Veterans.

The inaugural ranking was created to help veterans and active service members pursue a college education by providing information about campuses that offer benefits. Only 234 campuses were ranked; SU was No. 23 among Regional Colleges in the North.

“From a growing Student Military and Veterans Association to friendly staff and faculty members who assist with veterans’ affairs, SU is committed to providing a supportive educational environment for those who have served, or are currently serving, our country,” said Dr. Diane Allen, SU provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.

All of the ranked campuses are certified for the G.I. Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program to help veterans reduce education costs. They also are members of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium, a group that advocates for simplifying credit transfers and giving veterans credit for military training and national tests. In addition, the campuses scored well in terms of graduation rates, faculty resources, reputation and academic quality in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges for 2014.

At SU, nearly 200 students use U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs educational benefits annually. Staff, including a veterans’ affairs liaison in SU’s Registrar’s Office, help students navigate the processes. In addition to the Student Military and Veterans Association, SU also offers an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program for students interested in entering the military.

For five consecutive years, SU has been named a Military Friendly School® by Victory Media.  It’s Guide to Military Friendly Schools® recognizes campuses that exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military backgrounds.
