Awards and Scholarships For Art Students

Given to an art student or students in honor of an alumnus or special community art supporter that the Department of Art chooses to recognize. Student must have completed a minimum of 15 semester hours at Salisbury University,

This award is given to an art student or students in honor of an alumnus or special community art supporter that the Department of Art chooses to recognize.

Note: a minimum 3.0 GPA is required

Department of Art faculty select one or more full- or part-time students who have completed a minimum of 15 semester hours at Salisbury University.

Open to incoming freshman and transfer students, who have been accepted into the Salisbury University and declared an Art major.

Must have been a recipient of the Art Department Scholarship as an incoming freshman or transfer student. Renewal applications must be made up of new work completed since previous portfolio submission.

This award is meant to provide financial assistance to an outstanding art major or liberal studies art major for items such as travel, room, board, and other costs incurred in pursuing study beyond traditional courses provided by the Department of Art.

CRITERIA:

1. Rising junior to senior status continuing study away (ex. Internship)
2. Overall grade point average of 3.0 or better
3. Demonstration of “excellence” in one art track, and
4. The recommendation of one Department of Art faculty member, or the Director of the University Galleries or the Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts.

ELIGIBILITY: Any full-time art major or liberal studies art major pursuing a Bachelor or Art or Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Art; and working within at least one of the academic tracks.

Because the Art Department Student Assistantship Fund is meant to “assist” an outstanding art major that meets the above criteria in pursuing study beyond that provided by the Department of Art, and outside the traditional scholarship-type awards, students eligible for consideration must be pursuing in one of the following areas:

1. The “Junior Year Away” program related to study at one of the out-of-state Art Institutes International programs,
2. The Arts Administration internship at the national or high-level regional gallery/museum such as the National Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.
3. Any academically accredited international study program
4. Inter-term credit bearing courses such as ART 399 – International Field Study or courses with an international travel element.
5. Study at another institution during an “inter-term” (Winter Term or Summer Session) provided that study is not within commuting distance of the student’s residence.

NOTE FROM ART DEPARTMENT: Students need to provide evidence of returning to Salisbury University and evidence of acceptance to an outside travel program before receiving the award.

To provide award(s) to current student(s) participating in short-term, faculty-led international study abroad trips sponsored by the Art Department.

Prior to the invention of photography, travelers used the optical device· known as the Camera Lucida to sketch the places they visited.

The Camera Lucida award is available to students of all disciplines. Students interested in applying for the award should submit an essay of 2-3 pages addressing the following:

• How does this study abroad program and study abroad, in general, contribute to your undergraduate education or career goals?
• Will your ability to participate in a study abroad program be contingent on scholarships and awards?
• How do you anticipate using the award?

Awardees must submit proof of enrollment in a short-term, faculty-led study abroad trip.

The award(s) will be made for the Spring semester each year to assist a student who has developed an artistic practice of outstanding body of work involved with a form of painting and who offers a high level of commitment and personal connection with his/her/their work.  This award may assist with art related supplies, or fees associated with art activities.  The submission and evaluation process should be free of all fees. 

The student must meet the following qualifications:

1. Completed or in the process of completing 4 or more painting courses at Salisbury University with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
   Enrolled as a full-time student.
   The applicant will submit E-portfolio with a minimum of 10 digital images of current work with a corresponding identification list and artist statement describing his or her body of work.
2. Preference given to students with an exceptional body of work and financial need.
3. Submits a written summary of what they anticipate using funds for.

Intended to assist students with photography related supplies, travel or fees associated with seminars, workshops or conferences.

1. Completed or in the process of completing 2 or more photography courses at Salisbury University with a minimum 2.7 GPA Enrolled as a full time student
2. Submits a color or black and white portfolio with a minimum of 10 images.
3. Submits a written summary of what they anticipate using the funds for.
4. Preference given to students who have demonstrated financial need.

Awarded to a junior or senior art student with a concentration in a three-dimensional art form: hot glass, sculpture, or ceramics.

The Department of Art faculty selects one art student with a 3-D concentration.

CRITERIA:

1. Student must be a Junior or Senior with a major in Art and a concentration in a three-dimensional art form: hot glass, sculpture, or ceramics.
2. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be awarded and/or maintain this scholarship.
3. Preference shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need. Please write a short paragraph stating why you feel you need this scholarship.
4. This scholarship is renewable.

The Walter C. Thurston Memorial Award is sponsored annually by the Salisbury Exchange Club for a full-time art major who has completed a minimum of three photography courses at Salisbury University with a “B” average. The Department of Art faculty reviews all applicant portfolios and written comments of those students whose careers will involve photography in some manner.

The Salisbury Exchange Club, in memory of the late Mr. Thurston, who was a photographer and local businessman, sponsors the Walter C. Thurston Memorial Award annually.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be a full-time junior or senior art major.
2. Must have completed or in the process of completing nine (9) hours in photography at SU.
3. Must have maintained a “B” average in photography.
4. Must plan to use photography in future career.
5. Must submit a portfolio of black & white and/or color photo images via slideroom.com (see above) demonstrating a variety of skills.
6. Must submit an artist statement, also through slideroom.com.
7. Must not have received the Thurston Award any previous year.
