Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum (CEAC)
Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum (CEAC) prepares faculty to offer courses that meet the civic + community engagement general education requirements by integrating civic engagement experiences into their existing or planned courses. We approach this work to advance Salisbury University’s mission statement, which states in part, “Our highest purpose is to empower our students with the knowledge, skills, and core values that contribute to active citizenship, gainful employment, and life-long learning in a democratic society and interdependent world.”
Faculty participating in the seminar are expected to complete all assignments. The ultimate product is a revised course syllabus, reflecting a tightly integrated civic engagement component comprising one credit hour of their course or a major assignment. This civic engagement component is generally referred to as an enhancement.
Courses revised or developed through CEAC will offer:
- Academic Rigor
- A clear connection to one or more pressing social issue
- Reciprocal interactions between students and community members outside the classroom
- Chances for students and faculty to share their work in a setting beyond the classroom
Other objectives for this seminar series include:
- Differentiating between civic engagement and other forms of community-based learning
- Describing the goals of civic engagement in the university setting
- Reviewing frameworks and theories useful in guiding civic engagement work
- Developing inquiry-based civic engagement assignments and assessment tools
A civic + community engagement course will:
- Investigate a compelling question tied to your discipline
- Incorporate communication with community members outside the classroom
- Involve thoughtful planning for or delivery of action items
- Encourage students to move towards the 'justice-oriented citizen’
Faculty who complete the seminar and all required course assignments will receive $500 in funding that may be applied to travel, research costs, or the incorporation of civic engagement projects within the classroom.
