Examine the Big Questions

Philosophy Department

The Philosophy Department is a vibrant, intellectually diverse group focused on undergraduate education and public engagement in philosophy. We have strengths in ethics, political philosophy, environmental philosophy, philosophy of religion and Asian philosophy.

Our department embraces pluralism in our approach to all philosophical disciplines, and we pride ourselves on developing a strong sense of community with our students, faculty and staff.

We invite you to stop by the Philosophy House for more information about our programs or a friendly chat.

Our Academic Programs

Our students are trained to develop their ability to think critically and to examine fundamental questions about the nature of the self and the world, and thus to establish a foundation for intelligent action in the world. Students are exposed to a variety of philosophical perspectives and asked to philosophize.

The value of philosophical thinking for me resides in the possibility to see things for what they are, to understand them and to imagine new possibilities for how they could or should be.

Alumni Testimonial

Lindsay LoganLindsay Logan - Class of 2011

Senior UX Writer

When I chose a major in Philosophy, I often encountered the question: “what’ll you do with that?” Now ten years later, my response remains the same: “what won’t I do with that?” With a particular interest in Existentialism, Mind/Body, and Feminist Philosophy, I’ve pursued a variety of career paths from law to PR and now presently in tech as a User Experience Writer. Most of my day involves understanding different teams’ perspectives to help convey meaning and build abstract digital products that don’t exist yet. An education in philosophy allows me to approach problems inquisitively, make logical decisions within technical constraints, and distill complex information. Most importantly, I use philosophy every day to think critically about human experiences and shape the future of meaningful relationships between people and technology.
