Examine the Big Questions

Philosophy Department

The Philosophy Department is a vibrant, intellectually diverse group focused on undergraduate education and public engagement in philosophy. We have strengths in ethics, political philosophy, environmental philosophy, philosophy of religion and Asian philosophy.

Our department embraces pluralism in our approach to all philosophical disciplines, and we pride ourselves on developing a strong sense of community with our students, faculty and staff.

We invite you to stop by the Philosophy House for more information about our programs or a friendly chat.

Our Academic Programs

Our students are trained to develop their ability to think critically and to examine fundamental questions about the nature of the self and the world, and thus to establish a foundation for intelligent action in the world. Students are exposed to a variety of philosophical perspectives and asked to philosophize.

The value of philosophical thinking for me resides in the possibility to see things for what they are, to understand them and to imagine new possibilities for how they could or should be.

Senior policy analyst in Early Childhood Policy at the Center for American Progress

TI work as a senior policy analyst in Early Childhood Policy at the Center for American Progress. While at Salisbury, I participated in the Philosophy Club, was inducted into the Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honors Society, and though I didn't compete, I collaborated with Dr. Clement and the folks on the Ethics Bowl team. I think joining the philosophy program was pivotal for me. I didn't know much about philosophy above a hand-wavey, probably stereotypical view beforehand. I registered to take an intro course -- Critical Thinking with Dr. Tuske -- in my second year, and I think I submitted the paperwork to take it on as a minor the next week. Each class I took brought me further into the habits of mind that I think of as foundational to every choice I've made since. Being a part of the philosophy program made me a better writer, challenged my thinking, and helped me to see broader conceptual connections, particularly in the work that I do now.
