BIOL 299 - INTERNATIONAL STUDIES IN BIOLOGY

Learn about and be introduced to a biological discipline in a foreign country. No previous biology coursework required. Includes a minimum of 10 hours of lecture in the field and a minimum of 40 hours of hands-on lab work and/or field exercises abroad in addition to 15 hours of pre-/post-trip lecture. Repeatable for up to six credits under different subtitles. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Meets General Education IVA or IVB.

BIOL 399 - INTERNATIONAL FIELD STUDIES

Experience a specific aspect of a biological discipline in a foreign country. Pre-tour lectures, post-tour discussion and other activities required. May be taken twice under different subtitles. May not receive credit for both BIOL 399 and BIOL 570 with the same subtitle. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Fifteen hours pre-trip experience, at least 50 hours field activities over a minimum of 10 days, two-hour post-trip discussion session.

Coral Reef Biology in Roatan, Honduras

The Winter Program Coral Reef Biology in Roatan, Honduras runs for two weeks in January. The program is designed to give SU students the opportunity to study the fish, coral, plants, and invertebrates associated with a Caribbean tropical reef with a primary focus on the diversity of living organisms surrounding the reef. Much of the time is spent in the water SCUBA diving or snorkeling, where students can observe and interact with organisms in their natural environment. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, and swim with dolphins! Biology of Icelandic Fishes

The Summer Program Biology of Icelandic Fishes is targeted to advanced undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in fish biology. The 3-credit course is taught at Hólar University College in Iceland and will give students the opportunity to study the ecology, physiology, behavior and evolution of Icelandic fishes in their natural setting. Costa Rica - Ecotourism & Tropical Biodiversity

Adjunct Instructor Mary Gunther and Dr. Eric Liebgold both held classes in Costa Rica during Winter term. The two classes traveled together and participated in many of the same activities while also having sessions unique to their courses. Ms. Gunther's class focus was the economic impact of ecotourism and the relationship to a country's biodiversity. Dr. Liebgold's class focused on tropical biodiversity studying several different biomes. Activities included hikes and boat trips in national parks – on land and at sea, a class on the history of chocolate, zip-lining, kayaking, walks on suspension bridges; visits to banana and coffee plantations, a hike to view the Continental Divide, bird watching, night hikes, camera trapping and snorkeling.
