Overdue Fines and Replacement Charges
The Salisbury University Libraries assess fines or fees for SU materials damaged, lost, or returned/renewed after their due dates. The amount of these fines depends on the item type, time frame, and reason fines are being assessed. Please refer to the chart below for specific charges.

The following is a list of library material types and overdue fines. Please note:
- For materials requested from other University System of Maryland libraries, fines are charged by the owning library. Payment must be made directly to the owning library.
- For materials requested through Interlibrary Loan, the borrower is subject to replacement charges for any lost/damaged item. The amount is determined by the owning library.
General Collection Books
- Overdue Fine - None
- Replacement & Handling Fees (lost after 30 days)

Course Reserves
- Overdue Fine
  - Hourly Loans - $5.00 per hour (or portion of an hour)
  - 3-Day Loans - $10.00 per day (or portion of a day)
- Maximum Fine
  - Hourly Loans - $120.00
  - 3-Day Loans - $50.00
- Replacement Fee - Varies by item
DVDs (General Collection and International Film Collection)
- Overdue Fines - $1.00 per day (or portion of a day)
- Maximum Fine - $7.00
- Replacement Fee - $50.00
Headphones and Charging Kits
- Overdue Fines - $2.00 per hour (or portion of an hour)
- Maximum Fine - $30.00
- Replacement Fee - $50.00
Mac Chargers
- Overdue Fines - $2.00 per hour (or portion of an hour)

iPads
- Overdue Fines - $10.00 per day (or portion of a day) for iPad + $10.00 per day for iPad charger
- Maximum Fine
  - iPad - $100.00
  - Charger - $100.00
- Replacement Fee
  - iPad - $800.00 (assessed once item is 5 days overdue)
  - Charger - $50.00 (assessed once item is 5 days overdue)
- Screen Damage
  - Assessed based on Apple's out-of-warranty screen replacement charges.
The fine amounts listed above are automatically charged by our system. The actual amount charged may differ depending on the item and type of damage or loss.

Recalled Material
- Overdue Fines - $1.00 per day
- Maximum Fine - $30.00
- Replacement Fee - $90.00 (assessed once item is 30 days overdue)
Email Notices
The following notices are automatically delivered via email to all library patrons:
- Courtesy notice, reminding the patron of upcoming due dates
- Overdue notice
- Fine notices
- Lost Materials Bill
- Loan Recall Notice
Library patrons are responsible for being aware of library policies and procedures, monitoring when items they borrow are due back to the library, and reading email messages on a regular basis. Notices are delivered as a courtesy only. Failure to receive an email does not release the patron from the responsibility to return items on time and pay all accrued fines.
How to Pay Fines and Fees

Important Notes

Replacement book(s) are not accepted in lieu of replacement cost(s). Lost book payment reimbursements will only be made to patrons who have had active accounts within the previous five years and for materials returned within one year of being declared lost.
Faculty and staff are responsible for charges related to lost materials, overdue recalls (including those owned by SU), ILL books, loans from other USMAI Libraries, and iPads.
The accounts of Special Borrowers who accrue at least $5 in overdue fines will be blocked, and patrons will not be permitted to check out additional items until the fines are fully paid.
iPads and Equipment
- Patrons who accrue $20 or more in overdue laptop or equipment fines may not check out a laptop or piece of equipment until all laptop/equipment fines are fully paid.
- Patrons may have only one iPad charged to their account at a time.
Please note that unpaid bills could result in:
- blocked library privileges
- blocked course registration
- blocked graduation
- blocked transcript requests
- bills being sent to a collection agency
