SU Writers on the Shore Series Announces Fall Authors

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University inaugurates its fall Writers on the Shore series with its annual Creative Writing Festival 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, in Perdue Hall Auditorium.

The event features readings by Dr. John Nieves, SU associate professor of English, and 10 creative writing students including featured reader Lisa Compo, poetry editor of SU’s Scarab literary magazine.

Nieves has published poems in journals including North American Review, Poetry Northwest and Crazyhorse, among others. He won the Indiana Review Poetry Contest, and his first book, Curio, won the Elixir Press Annual Poetry Award Judge’s Prize. His work also recently was featured in the acclaimed anthology The Eloquent Poem.

Wednesday, October 2 – Matthew Vollmer: A National Endowment for the Arts fellowship winner, Vollmer is the author of two story collections — Future Missionaries of America and Gateway to Paradise — as well as two essay collections — Inscriptions for Headstones and Permanent Exhibit. He also edited A Book of Uncommon Prayer, collecting invocations from more than 60 acclaimed and emerging authors. His work has appeared in Paris Review, Glimmer and Ploughshares, among others.

Wednesday, November 6 – Cary Holladay: A National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and O. Henry Prize winner, Holladay has written eight volumes of fiction, including the most recent, Brides in the Sky: Stories and a Novella. Her works have appeared in publications such as Alaska Quarterly Review, Blackbird and The Cincinnati Review.

Wednesday, November 20 – Don Bogen: A National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient and winner of the Poetry Society of America’s The Writer/Emily Dickinson Award, Bogen also has held Fulbright positions in Spain and at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry in Belfast. The Cincinnati Review’s editor-at-large, Bogen is the author of five books of poetry, most recently Immediate Song.

All individual authors in the series read from their works at 8 p.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons.
