SU Faculty and Staff Present at International Nursing Research Congress

SALISBURY, MD---Four Salisbury University nursing faculty and staff were among the presenters at the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society’s 30th International Nursing Research Congress in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

SU presenters included Drs. Judith Jarosinski, Tina Reid and Lisa Seldomridge, and Abigail Johnson. They joined over 1,200 nurse researchers, students, clinicians, and leaders from more 40 countries who gathered to learn from evidence-based research presentations.

The first SU presentation, “An Innovative Approach to the Nursing Faculty Shortage: A Web Resource for Aspiring Nurse Educators,” was among three finalists for the 2019 Excellence in Educational Research Award.

Co-authors Seldomridge, Jarosinski, Johnson and Dr. Kaynabess Freda described the development and beta-testing of www.LeadNursingForward.org, a collaborative project between the SU and University of Maryland Schools of Nursing and the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) to increase the number of nurse educators in Maryland. 

Additional SU presentations included “Networking and Partnership are integral in Nursing Education Initiatives: Transitioning Nurse Clinicians to Roles as Nurse Educators” and “Outcomes of a Structured Mentorship Program for Expert Clinicians in New Roles as Clinical Faculty.” Both papers were authored by Seldomridge, Jarosinski, Reid, Bradley Hauck and Beverly Payne.

“Networking and Partnership” reported on the expansion of the Eastern Shore Faculty Academy and Mentorship Initiative to Central and Western Maryland. This hybrid educational experience prepares expert registered nurses for positions as nursing faculty.

“Outcomes of a Structured Mentorship Program” focused on research evaluating aspects of a structured, comprehensive, one-to-one mentorship experience. Focus group data from mentor/mentee pairs was used to uncover mentee and mentor perspectives of this formal mentorship experience. The authors discussed the successes and challenges of providing the curriculum and mentorship experience across the state. 

These projects were supported by Nurse Support Program (NSP) II Grants from the Maryland Higher Education Commission under the auspices of the Health Services Cost Review Commission.
