SU Students Shop Sustainably at ESA Thrift Market

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Environmental Student Association (ESA) recently brought sustainable shopping to the campus community during the ESA Thrift Market.

Student organizations and student small business owners sold, traded and gave away items including clothing, accessories, hand-made jewelry, art and room décor.

“Our overall goal is to help students make money and save on their own spending,” said junior Nicole Wolf, ESA president. “It’s important for us to promote a circular economy, especially when fast fashion is so prominent among young consumers. We want these clothes to get as much use from people as possible.”

The SU Recycling Department used the opportunity to promote the “Give and Go Program,” through which students can donate unwanted items as they are moving out of their residences at the end of each semester.

“It’s necessary to raise awareness of the environmental organizations and programs available across campus, and this event is a great way to do that,” said junior Olivia Hawkins. “We want students to see there are other options instead of throwing items away and the benefits of continuing the lifecycle of goods.”

“Give and Go” items were available for free at the market if guests followed the club on social media and took a recycling survey. Leftover items at the end of each semester are donated to area shelters and charities. 

Freshman Sophia Jenkins appreciated the benefits of having the event on campus in the midst of student traffic in between classes. 

“Fun events like these give campus a good feel,” she said. “It’s good for your mental health to step away from classes and your typical busy routine to stop, slow down, and take some time to shop and do something for yourself.”
