'History of Oysters' Presentation Scheduled April 6 at SU

SALISBURY, MD---The Edward H. Nabb Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University hosts the lecture “On the Half Shell: Digging into the History of Oysters in the Chesapeake” 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the Nabb Center Classroom in the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons.

Dr. Beth Ragan, SU professor of anthropology, discusses new archaeological research which is gauging just how important oysters were for the Native people of the region, suggesting how they were able to harvest at levels comparable to today without depleting the stocks. She explains how a fuller consideration of the human relationship with the oyster over time may provide lessons that may be useful for maintaining and growing oyster reefs today.
