Delegate Norman Conway Speaks on State Budget April 21

SALISBURY, MD---Norman H. Conway (D-38B-Wicomico), chair of the Maryland House of Delegates Appropriations Committee, discusses political issues and politics of the 2004 General Assembly session 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, in the Worcester Room of the Commons at Salisbury University. An SU alumnus and recipient of this year’s John R. Hargreaves Distinguished Legislative Fellow Award, presented by the University’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), Conway speaks on the state budget, taxes and the debate on slot machines. Conway has been a tireless advocate for education within the state legislature, playing an influential role in the passage of legislation on initiatives proposed by the Thornton Commission on Education Finance, Equity and Excellence, which provides greater state funding for schools. At SU, he was instrumental in the construction of SU’s $37 million Henson Science Hall in 2002. Known as a fair-minded and hard-working member of the House, Conway is the third recipient of the Hargreaves Award. Previous recipients include Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr. (D-27-Calvert) and Delegate Howard “Pete” Rawlings (D-40-Baltimore). The Hargreaves Distinguished Legislative Fellow Program is a distinctive program in the University System of Maryland that provides an opportunity for a renowned member of the Maryland General Assembly to engage SU students in civic education. Funding is made possible by a donation to SU from the estate of the late John R. Hargreaves, a member of the Maryland General Assembly from Caroline County.
