IRP Announces Fall 2007 Schedule
SALISBURY, MD---Retired persons from the University and the community are cordially invited to join the Institute for Retired Persons Tuesday afternoon meetings feature outstanding speakers on a wide variety of topics. Interest groups meeting monthly include touring, walking, bicycling, book review, and bridge. The group sponsors two bus trips each year as well as a Holiday luncheon and a spring dinner.
The following programs are scheduled for the Fall::
September 4: Wicomico County Sheriff, Mike Lewis, will address the issue of crime as it affects senior citizens in the County.
September 11: Dr. Melanie Perreault, Salisbury University History Department, will speak on “Dispelling the Myths of the Settlement of Jamestown”..
September 18: Dr Ted Gelkey of the Department of Education will introduce the recipients of the scholarships awarded by the IRP in the spring.
September 25: An update on diabetes as it affects the over 55 population will be presented by Pam Silvia, RN, Diabetes Director at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. (Montgomery Room)
October 2: Keith Koehler, public affairs specialist at the NASA/Wallops Island Flight Facility, will talk about aerospace research being conducted there. (Montgomery Room)
October 9. Barry King, Director of Wicomico County Habitat for Humanity, will present a talk on neighborhood revitalization and affordable housing.
October 16: The group will gather for the fall trip to Jamestown, in celebration of Jamestown’s 400th anniversary. (Meet at Civic Center. Advance registration required)
October 23: The meeting will take place at the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art where there will be a guided tour. (Ward Museum)
October 30: Marie Cavallaro will show her award winning film, “Clay, Fire and Hands”, featuring clay potters and hand builders of the Eastern Shore.
November 6: The pros and cons of reverse mortgages will be presented by Marion Phillips, an expert in the field. (Nanticoke Room)
November 13: Award winning nature photographer, David Ganoe, will display and discuss his work.
November 27: Joan Mulvanay, Director of the Wellness Community of Delmarva, will tell the group of the many services provided by this organization.
December 1: The program for the Holiday luncheon will be presented by active bird watchers, Larry and Jean Fry, who will concentrate on birds of the Eastern Shore. (Worcester Room)
