Musical Showcase Features Two Productions December 9-11

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---For the first time, Salisbury University’s annual Fall Musical Showcase features performances of two separate productions Friday-Sunday, December 9-11, in the Black Box Theatre of Fulton Hall.

class=""MsoNormal"">Under the direction of Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer, director of SU Theatre, and Dr. William M. Folger, director of choral activities, students perform condensed versions of Sandy Wilson’s The Boyfriend and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

class=""MsoNormal"">“We are looking to give students an advanced opportunity to take a character through an entire role,” said Folger of the change in format, which in the past has seen students perform a montage of Broadway scenes and numbers.

class=""MsoNormal"">Set on the French Riviera in the 1920s, The Boyfriend follows millionaire heiress Polly Browne as she longs for a boyfriend to escort her to her finishing school’s ball. She falls in love with an errand boy who delivers her dress for the dance. When he runs off after being recognized by a wealthy couple, many assume Polly’s new boyfriend is a thief. By the play’s end, his true identity is revealed. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, December 9, and 2 p.m. Saturday, December 10.

class=""MsoNormal"">Based on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music tells the story of middle-aged Fredrik Egerman and his teen-age bride, Anne. A visit to the theatre and a chance encounter with actress Desiree Armfeldt, with whom Fredrik once had an affair, leads to a chain of events that finds all three spending a sexually charged weekend at a country estate along with Desiree’s partner, Count Carl-Magnus Malcom, and his wife, Charlotte. Performances are 8 p.m. Saturday, December 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, December 11.
