'Once Upon a Mattress' Auditions Monday, November 28
SALISBURY, MD---Open auditions for the musical, Once Upon a Mattress, are Monday, November 28, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Fulton Hall Room 130 at Salisbury University. Callbacks are Tuesday, November 29, at the same time and place.
All actors should be prepared to sing no more than 16 bars of a song in the style of the musical (late 1950’s jazz). Actors will also be required to perform a dance audition after singing and should dress for movement.
Rehearsals begin in February. Performances are in early March.
Directed by Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer, the Bobbi Biron Theatre Program, the Dance Program and the Department of Music at Salisbury University blend their talents in this fanciful re-imagining of the classic fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.”
According to Pfeiffer, “Once Upon a Mattress is a sort of Fractured Fairy Tales revision of the classic story and centers on a hapless Prince and his search for a Princess who will measure up to his demanding Queen mother’s standards. As in all fairy tales, nothing is at it appears – and the princess who finally proves most worthy is not the delicate creature imagined but the raucous tom-boy from the swamps – Princess Winifred. Of course, all conflicts are settled and all is put right in the end as the domineering Queen is miraculously silenced when her previously mute husband, the King, finds his voice. A sprightly mix of 1950’s medieval fairy tale, snappy songs and dances, and the triumph of love, Once Upon a Mattress promises great fun for actors and audiences alike.”
The original Broadway production launched the career of Carol Burnett. For more information contact Pfeiffer at tppfeiffer@salisbury.edu or call 410-543-6235.
