SSO Spring Concert Scheduled Sunday, May 9

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University (SSO) performs the works of Grieg, Schubert, Saint-Saens and Mozart during its annual spring concert 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

“The program is one that challenges the players,” said SSO manager Derek Bowden. “The pieces chosen represent various styles of Western Art music including Baroque, Classical and Romantic.”

Conducted by Jacqueline Wogick, making her debut with the SSO, the concert includes Grieg’s Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Schubert’s Symphony No. 3 in D Major and Saint-Saens’ Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah.

“This concert ushers in the spirit of springtime and celebrates our young people,” said Wogick.

Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D Major features SU music major SungEun “Sunny” Kim on piano in her first performance with the SSO, and the composer’s Divertimento includes members of the SSO’s Affiliated Youth and Collegiate Orchestra.

“It gives students in the Youth Orchestra a taste of what it’s like to play in the larger orchestra,” said Bowden. “For some of the older students, it is a first step toward their segueing into the SSO.”

Featured musicians from the SSO include Julie Barton and John O’Meara on oboe, violinists Ruben Lopez and Bobbie Thamert, Erin Winters and Charles Doherty playing French horn, Otello Meucci on clarinet, Ronald Reed playing bassoon, Ron Davis on first trumpet and first flutist Leslie Weihs.
