Wind Ensemble Presents 'Band Classics'

SALISBURY, MD--- The Salisbury University Wind Ensemble presents its spring concert, "Band Classics," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Featured soloist Amy Bejm performs Johann Nepomuk Hummel's "Concerto a Trombona Principale." Bejm, who is principal trumpet for the Wind Ensemble, also has performed with a variety of campus groups including the Chamber Winds Ensemble, the Brass Quintet, the Chamber Choir, the Jazz Guitar Ensemble, the Salisbury Youth and Collegiate Orchestra, and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra as well as the Maryland Intercollegiate Band and the Annapolis Wind Symphony.

Bejm is president of Music Educations National Conference Student Chapter 416. After graduating from SU in May 2004, she plans to teach instrumental music in Maryland while pursuing her master's degree in music education from the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

Other pieces scheduled for performance include Paul Creston's "Celebration Overture," Vittorio Giannini's "Symphony Number 3 for Band" and Brian Balmages' "Star Above, Shine Brightly." The concert ends with Harry L. Alford's "The Purple Carnival March."

SU music professor Dr. Richard L. Johnson directs the Wind Ensemble. He has appeared internationally, conducting at the American Academy of Rome for David Rakoski. He recently appeared as guest conductor for the U.S. Naval Academy Band Chamber Music Series.

Johnson also has lectured at the Ference Liszt Academy in Budapest, and conducted several world premieres of music by Peter Westergaard, James Syler, Beth Wiemann and most recently, John Frantzen.

"Band Classics" is funded in part by the Fulton School of Liberal Arts and contributions to the Wind Ensemble. The concert is free and the public is cordially invited.
