24th Philosophy Spring Symposium is May 1

SALISBURY, MD---The 24th annual Salisbury University Philosophy Spring Symposium is scheduled 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, in Henson Science Hall Room 243.

This year’s topic is, “Is the Mind the Brain?” According to Dr. Jerome Miller of the Philosophy Department, it “should be an intriguing question to wrap your mind around.” Worrying that such a topic might seem a little intimidating, he added that the trailing title should spark interest: “Is Prozac the Solution to Everything?”

This year’s speakers are two outstanding philosophers and teachers in the field: Dr. David Finkelstein of the University of Chicago, who has written extensively on the mind and the relation of consciousness with the unconscious, and Dr. Charles Travis, who teaches at Northwestern University and has authored a book, Unshadowed Thought, on the workings of the mind. Both speak in the morning.

Following a lunch break, Dr. Joerg Tuske of the Philosophy Department and Dr. Jason McCartney of the Psychology Department offer brief rejoinders followed by an audience discussion.

“The Spring Symposium has become a popular annual event attracting not just students and faculty but also a devoted community following,” said Dr. Francis Kane, co-founder of the event.
