Technology Tools for Writing & Engagement

Prior to COVID, a good discussion for a class usually involved students first doing some individual writing around an orienting discussion question, then pairing and sharing with a student near them, and then opening it up to a full-class discussion.  This kind of organization of the discussion allows students to test out some initial ideas with a single peer before saying something in front of the larger class.  Of course, much of this original method would work for a synchronous Zoom session—breakout rooms can be used to allow students to exchange ideas before coming back to the full group.  However, other discussion related options beyond synchronous Zoom/breakout rooms exist for this purpose.
