The Counseling Center specializes in short-term, generalist treatment options. Visit the Center’s Scope of Service webpage to learn more. If long-term or specialized treatment is recommended, our staff can help support students in the process of connecting with resources that best fit their needs.
If you, or another student, is in immediate danger, call 911. For concerns about a student’s immediate safety, call University Police at 410-543-6222 or their local police department.
For 24/7 access to mental health support, all SU students can access TimelyCare’s TalkNow service for free by downloading the TimelyCare app or by visiting the TimelyCare website and selecting TalkNow. Anyone can access off-campus crisis resources at any time. Visit the Crisis Resources webpage for a list of on and off campus crisis resources.
Urgent appointments are available at the Counseling Center for students during walk-in hours, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. To initiate an urgent appointment, students can walk into the Counseling Center office, which is located on the second floor of the Guerrieri Student Union in room 263, and tell front desk staff they need an urgent appointment. The student will be offered the first available opening. Before the appointment, the student will complete required intake forms and will then meet with a clinician to create a plan.
In order to initiate non-crisis clinical services, all students will first complete a Brief Needs Assessment. During the appointment the student will work with a clinician to determine which services are the best fit to effectively address the student’s concerns. Brief Needs Assessment last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Prior to the start of the appointment, students are asked to complete basic forms, which take 10 to 15 minutes.
Initiate a first appointment by:
Attending a walk-in appointment in the GSU, room 263, on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Calling 410-543-6070 during regular business hours (weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
The Counseling Center offers a short-term treatment model, so we are able to best serve all SU students. Sessions with a clinician last up to 50 minutes and are focused on working towards identified treatment goals. If it is decided that brief therapy is not the best fit to address the presenting problems, the Center has many community referral options and can assist with the referral process.
Couples Therapy
The Counseling Center offers a short-term treatment model for couples (married or not). Sessions last up to 50 minutes and involve conflict resolution, improving communication, and working to address issues related to external stressors, among other identified treatment needs. At least one person in the relationship must be an SU student. Couples counseling is initiated with each member of the relationship attending a Brief Needs Assessment. During the Brief Needs Assessment, be sure to indicate that you would like to initiate couples counseling.
Referrals
In some cases, it maybe determined that a student would benefit from a referral to an on- or off-campus service. This may include referrals to off-campus therapy, psychiatry, or other mental health referral needs. The Center can help with the process of identifying and connecting with the recommended service. There is also information about connecting to providers in the community on the Center’s Off-Campus Providers website.
Single Session
This one-time session option is well-suited to students who seek help related to one specific topic. This is typically helpful when the student already has a good understanding of the concern but is unsure about what steps to take to resolve it. Single Sessions can last up to 50 minutes; however, they are often shorter, ending when the student identifies actions to take. If another appointment is needed, then other treatment options will be discussed.

While information about clients is confidential, staff at the Counseling Center can offer recommendations after a discussion about the behavior and emotional state of the student in question. We can recommend strategies for approaching the student and making a referral. Relevant resources on or off campus could also be discussed.
